Expanding Chinese Language in N.C. Schools

DSC03789Go Global NC’s dedication to global engagement in North Carolina includes fostering globally-minded future leaders early on. Staying true to this mission, Go Global NC kicked off its seventh straight year of the Chinese guest teacher program on August 3.

With China’s prominent business presence in North Carolina and its emergence as one of the world’s top economies, learning the Chinese language and advancing relationships with China is vital to achieving success in the global arena.

Eleven North Carolina school districts welcomed Chinese guest teachers for the 2016-2017 school year. With 22 new guest teachers on board, the participating districts will be able to offer expanded Chinese language and culture courses at elementary, middle, and high school levels.

The guest teacher program has contributed to the “jumpstart” of state-wide Chinese language programs. Between the early 2000’s and today, the number of K-12 students enrolled in Chinese has surged from 300 to 12,500.

“Hosting educators from another country helps provide our students with an unforgettable global experience without leaving North Carolina,” said Go Global NC’s Senior Director of Programs, Meredith Henderson.
